Students who have academic interests for which no program of study already at UGA would be suitable or which combine several major areas within the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences may wish to pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) major. Students in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program plan a program of study and write a Senior Thesis under the supervision of a Franklin College faculty advisor and an advisory committee. The student is responsible for creating the committee and selecting the major advisor. The Interdisciplinary Studies major consists of a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework in addition to the Senior Thesis (3 hours), which is written on a topic of special interest to the student. Each interdisciplinary major must consist of a coherent pattern of courses in two or more disciplines, at least one of which resides within the Franklin College. Please note that while some programs may include courses from other colleges within the University, no program may bring more than 9 hours of upper level (3000-4000) coursework from other colleges. Applicants for the program must have completed no less than 30 and no more than 75 semester hours of credit with a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average. They must also maintain a 3.00 average to remain in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The program requires careful advance planning and rigorous study. It is designed for students who have a plan for a course of study that will meet certain requirements that they have set for themselves. It is not for students who have taken a number of courses in various areas, can't settle on a major course of study and try to "pull something together" when they are seniors.
